Maulidan Nabi...

Last Monday was the 12th day of Rabi ul-Awal in the Hijri (Islamic) Calendar. It was my sister's Hijri birthday and, more especially and importantly, it was the 1480th anniversary of the birth of the Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.). This day is called Maulidan Nabi in Arabic. It is a very special day, but we do not really celebrate it. What we do is try to look within ourselves and see how much of a guide and model the Prophet is to all of us as we live our days. The day is spent, as much as possible, in remembrance of the Prophet.

I would like to share my most favorite story about the Prophet. It is said that the Prophet respected life in all forms. He was the perfect personification of kindness and benevolence.

One of the facts known about him was that he liked cats and he actually had a pet cat. There was this one time, it is said, that he was about to perform salat (prayer) and, as he was about to get his praying carpet, he saw that a cat was sleeping on the carpet. Of course, it was impossible to pray or use the carpet without waking or disturbing the cat. What the Prophet did was very carefully, so as not to wake the cat, he cut the carpet in two and left the part where the cat was as is and used the other half for his salat.

This story only shows how the Prophet respected and valued even animals. This is proof of how good a person he was and this reminds us about how we should be as people. This story is usually told to us in the madrasah when discussing about respect for others and other creatures, about how waking or disturbing others (and even animals) when they are asleep is discouraged, and about kindness to all living things/beings. If it is important to respect and be kind to animals, then isn't it far more important to respect and be kind to our fellow human beings?

this reminds me of that saying that goes something like "you know more about a person's character by how he treats animals"

and at Harry Potter... Sirius Black also said something like "you can take better measure of a man by how he treats creatures inferior to him"

anyway, one just can't respect oe particular life form and not the others... that's a really good way of simplifying things... and simplifying leading a decent life :)

(will answer the tag after I get back na lang ha?)

Nice cat story. Reminds me also of Dom's comment about a sleeping cat on her lap--"nakakahiyang gisingin."
