I'm a teacher!!!

Oh-kay!

My semester is officially over. I submitted my grades last Monday. It was a wonderful semester. I was so busy that I could barely take time to breathe, but it was a fun-filled semester for me. I am just hoping that my students won't forget the things we learned in our classes. I, too, learned a lot. I learned a lot from my students and I learned a lot about myself. There were many things that I didn't think I could handle, but I was able to. I believe that every single day that passed these past months made me stronger. And, I have teaching to thank for that!

When people found out that I was going to teach, some were happy and some disappointed, even horrified!
-"Wow! That's great! You'll make a good teacher!"
-"Hay, kailangan ng kabataan natin ang mga tulad mo! It's good that you decided to teach!" (Oh, our youth need people like you!)
-"Ay, teacher lang?! Sayang naman ang utak mong 'yan!" (A teacher?! With your brain? What a waste!)

These were but some of the reactions I got from different people. Ever since I took AB English in my undergrad, people's reaction have basically been the same as my course was always equated with the teaching profession and I've been saying that it's what I've always wanted to do. Some would even go as far as ask my parents why I was allowed to take such "mediocre" course. I'd be better off taking BS Accountancy or a Pre-Med Course, they'd tell my parents. It's a good thing that my parents are not the type to question our decisions and force us to do things we don't really want to do.

It just makes me sad how the teaching profession is looked down upon by people, especially in this country. The third reaction I mentioned would always tick me off! What do people expect of teachers? Are there people who are actually too good to be just teachers?! Well, I definitely am not! I am a teacher, I have always been and will always be... and I am damn proud of that! Oh, and I tell you, it is not easy being a teacher.

No matter what people say or think, I am happy to be where I am now and doing what I am doing. What's important is that I enjoy and I love what I am doing. Besides, I am not one to think or care about what other people might think or say. I have high respect for all my teachers and mentors and I want to be just like them. I have fun teaching and I am at peace with myself when I am teaching. That's all that matters. :)

Happy birthday, Bespren Cha! :) Mwahugs!

Visiting you blog after quite some time. I can understand what you mean. People tend to look down on a teacher's job. Maybe because of the fact that it is not a high flying, high profile or high income job. However, many don't realise the importance as children spend more time with their teachers than anyone else and play a big part in shaping them.

Hi BP! Are you really? Congrats!

Next time somebody says, "Teacher ka lang?" just tell them, "Ayos lang. Magaling ako!"

it's sad how some people can be so snooty to think that the teaching profession is a lowly one. it is because they equate it with the money one gets from the profession. and these are the same people who cannot understand the dignity of being able to mold young minds, and produce good citizens in this country.

but i am proud of you, and i salute you for choosing to be one. i commend your parents, too, for letting you choose what you do best. :-)
